Writing Prompts For Kids

You wake up one morning and your pet can talk. What is the first thing it says to you? Write a story about your day together, including three funny things your pet tells you and one secret it has been keeping. What happens at the end of the day — can it still talk?

You find a backpack that has one magical power — but it only works once a day. What is the power? Write about a week of school (Monday to Friday) where you use the backpack each day to solve a different problem. What happens on Friday when the power stops working?

You are sent to a new planet as the first human visitor. Describe the planet: What color is the sky? What does the ground feel like? Are there creatures? What do they look like? Write a diary entry about your first 24 hours there. What do you eat? Where do you sleep? What surprised you most?

You become invisible for one whole day. You can see and hear everything, but nobody can see or hear you. Where do you go? What do you do? Do you play a trick on someone? Help someone without them knowing? Write a story about the best — and worst — parts of being invisible.

You can travel to any time in history for one lunch break. Where do you go? Who do you eat with? What do you talk about? Describe the food, the place, and the person. Do you tell them you are from the future? Write the story as a scene with dialogue.

You discover a small door behind your bookshelf that you never noticed before. It is too small for a person, but you can fit your hand through. What do you feel on the other side? Write a story about what you find — is it a new world, a tiny civilization, or something else entirely? What happens when you try to open the door wider?

Create your own superhero. Give them a name, a power, a weakness, and a origin story (how they got their power). Then write a scene where the superhero faces their first real challenge — something their power alone cannot solve. How do they use their weakness or something else to save the day?
